The Stilinski’s Steal the Show

As a reminder, I did my review in the style of Price Peterson from TV.com. After reading through his work again, I also realized how many parenthesis he uses in his writing. In addition to what I had pointed out in my previous post (informal, opinionated, focus on character & actors, and comparisons to other shows), I tried to incorporate the use of parenthesis into my piece. Peterson also tends to review single episodes of a show at a time, so I focused this one on season 3, episode 9 of Teen Wolf. The episode itself is titled "The Girl Who Knew Too Much." I also wrote it as if the episode was shown last night, since he typically does his reviews/recaps the day after it airs. Although he hasn't reviewed this episode or really any episode of Teen Wolf, but has done photo recaps of them, I decided to incorporate three of his infamous photo recap pictures from this episode in the review as well as a personal photo of mine from this weekend.

The Stilinski’s Steal the Show
Teen Wolf 309: “The Girl Who Knew Too Much”

Werewolves and kanimas and darachs. Oh my! Last night’s episode of MTV’s Teen Wolf had me on the edge of my seat and I’m still trying to cope with all of the huge reveals. Seriously, it’s like we know everything now. We know who the Darach is, we know exactly what group the Darach is targeting next, and we finally know what the hell Lydia is (seriously, it was about time for that one… We’ve been waiting a season and a half to find out).

Now, I’m not going to go ahead and spoil the entire episode for you because what kind of a friend would I be if I did that? (A bad one.) In fact, I’m not even going to talk about the girl who really did know too much. This is mostly because two other characters stole the entire show last night: The Stilinski family.

It’s pretty obvious that I’m in love with both Stiles Stilinski and his father, Sheriff Stilinski. Actually, it probably wouldn't even be considered love. It has grown into a full-blown obsession. But I know I can’t be alone, right?

In this episode of Teen Wolf, Stiles tries to explain all the crazy supernatural events that have been happening in Beacon Hills to his in-the-dark father. The way he explains it, though, is rather unique. Instead of simply explaining everything by just talking, Stiles proposes a better idea: He uses chess. Each chess piece represents a different person in the town and each person has a different colored label to represent what they are (hunter, werewolf, druid, etc.). While Stiles probably thinks his labeled chess piece method will be easy to understand, it’s evident that the Sheriff just isn’t getting it. He’s annoyed, even more confused than before, and is losing faith in his own son. What makes this scene so humorous, though, is how ridiculous Stiles sounds trying to explain the different supernatural creatures. It’s probably exactly how I sound when I try to explain it to people who haven’t seen the show.

Which reminds me…

If you’re still one of the few reluctant to give Teen Wolf a chance because it’s on MTV, I would advise you to forget about the network all together. This series isn’t like anything else the network has put out before. It would even be silly and pointless to compare it to the other scripted show on MTV, Awkward. They’re just so different.

Now, back to last night’s episode.

The most heartbreaking scene occurred when Stiles and his father were at the hospital. For the first time in the entire series (aside from that one time Lydia poisoned everyone and Stiles hallucinated), the Sheriff yelled at Stiles. The look on both of their faces killed me and probably more than half of the viewers watching. The real killer came, though, when Stiles said, “Mom would have believed me.” Cue the waterworks and make sure you’ve got those tissues handy, ladies and gentlemen. And let’s not forget the closing scene of the episode where the Darach basically kidnaps (or would it be dadnaps?) the Sheriff, leaving an extremely sad, scared, and heartbroken Stiles behind. If there is anything that gets me tearing up during Teen Wolf, it’s those Stilinski family feels.

One thing I genuinely love about this show is how well it portrays the adult figures, this episode showing that aspect extremely well. The Sheriff isn’t just there to accent his son nor does he have a minor role. Many supernatural based shows, like the Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, don’t focus on the parents. Sure, they’re mentioned and seen every once in awhile, but the show could virtually exist without them. Teen Wolf, though, makes these characters vital not only to the children of the show, but also to the viewers watching at home. Think of the show without Sheriff Stilinski. It just wouldn’t be the same.

While now would be a good time to praise the writers for writing these characters so beautifully, the characters would be nothing without the actors portraying them. Dylan O’Brien (Stiles) and Linden Ashby (Sheriff Stilinski) have such undeniable chemistry and talent, that I’m not sure I’d feel the same about them if any other actor replaced them. Shout out to the people who actually casted them in the first place. You did good!

What was your favorite Stilinski moment in last night’s episode? What about of all time?

What do you think the rest of the season has in store for this duo and the other characters?

  1. Interesting review, and great photos. I had fun reading this! Pretty good episode choice too.

The Stilinski's are definitely some of my favorite characters on the show, particularly Stiles. I find his awkward moments with Derek to be pretty entertaining, haha.

As for the last question, it's a good one. Hopefully even more antics from both Stiles and his father, as well as some more father-son bonding!
